No special cleaning products are needed to keep your countertop looking great. However, damage may occur if your countertop is mistreated. To help prevent this from happening, we’ve listed a few simple ways to care for and maintain your countertops original elegance and beauty for years to come.
Do not cut directly on the Solid Surface; always use a cutting board. Run cold water when pouring hot water into sinks. Remove nail polish with a non-acetone-based nail polish remover and flush with water.
Every day general cleaning only requires a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. If you have a matte finish, you can use an abrasive cleaner like Ajax or Comet. If you do use an abrasive cleaner, we recommend periodically cleaning the entire surface in a circular motion to maintain uniformity. Avoid using strong acidic cleansers (those designed for drains, toilets or ovens). Some of them cause whitening, which can be difficult to remove. Other substances that may cause damage includes industrial chemicals such as strong acids, ketones and solvenated chlorine.
Solid Surface tops have excellent heat resistance compared with other ordinary countertops. However, placing hot pans, as well as some heat-generating appliances such as frying pans or pots, can damage the surface. A few simple precautions include not placing pans directly from the burner or oven on your countertops. They can withstand high temperatures however any prolonged or extreme heat may cause yellowing. Always use a hot pad or a trivet with rubber feet to protect your tops.
Troublesome spills and stains, such as food dye, tea or colored fruit drinks can be removed with full strength bleach followed by a general cleaner flushed with water. Be sure and remove any remaining bleach on the surface within five minutes. If a lit cigarette comes in contact with the countertop, a nicotine stain or a scorch mark may occur. Simply use an abrasive cleaner or buff in a circular motion with a Scotch Brite pad to remove.
Inevitably, your countertop will get scratched with everyday ware. For small, superficial scratches, simply wet an ultra-fine Scotch Brite pad and rub in a circular motion, then clean with soap and water and let dry. If you want to add additional shine to your countertop, apply a non-wax polish cleaner to a dry surface and wipe clean.
